where I will live

I.

“We need to talk about what happened.”

“What happened?”

“I thought you said it was over.”

“What’s over?”

“Do you even know where you are?”

“Close your eyes. What do you smell?”

“Air conditioning. Metal. Markers. Particle boards.”

“What do you feel?”

“Cold.”

“What else do you feel?”

“Just cold. I’m looking at my phone.”

“What’s on your phone?”

“I don’t want to look.”

“Why don’t you want to look?”

“Because I don’t want to look.”

“Look at your phone. How do you feel?”

“I want to cry.”

“Why do you want to cry?”

“Because all of my nightmares are true in that room.”

“Can you put the phone away?”

“No. I’m always in that room. Even when I think I’ve left, I’m still in that room.”

“I didn’t say open your eyes yet.”

“I don’t need to keep them closed. I’m still in there, in that office.”
